The First Native American Woman to Bring a Show to Broadway

Larissa FastHorse is the first Native American woman to bring a play to Broadway, but it was Zitkala Sa (the real-life Red Bird on whom the character of Red Dove is based) who brought the first show—The Sundance Opera–to be performed there, although it was her collaborator William Hanson who got the credit.

Women’s rights pioneer Matilda Joslyn Gage wrote admiringly about matriarchal forms of power, highlighting the strong role women played within the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy, and in 1893 was offered an honorary adoption by the Wolf Clan of the Mohawk Nation.
