Maybe it’s because my first view of her was when we came into New York harbor as immigrants headed for Ellis Island. It was 1954, the last year Ellis Island was open. I was only two years old so I don’t have any memories—or at least I think I don’t—but I’m always deeply moved by her image. That’s why I included her in the Red Dove Trilogy–but, of course, for Red Dove, as a Native American girl, she was a symbol of a world that had changed completely.
